The Magic of Mixed Media in Textile Design

The Magic of Mixed Media in Textile Design

How Repurposed Materials Can Shape Our Textiles

In a world that increasingly values sustainability and innovation, at Juliette O Designs, we believe that beauty and responsibility go hand in hand, which is why we embrace an unusual mixed-media approach - our fabric designs are punctuated with unexpected, repurposed materials. From expired coffee granules to discarded silk remnants, our creative process is a real insight into the magic of upcycling in contemporary textile design.

Breathing New Life into Discarded Materials

Textile design has long been rooted in craftsmanship and experimentation, but at Juliette O we like to push the boundaries by incorporating materials that might otherwise go to waste. Sustainability isn't just about reducing our carbon footprint; it's about reimagining the potential of overlooked resources and turning them into something truly beautiful.

One of our most celebrated examples is the Plume range from The Woodland Collection, which evolved from a mixed-media artwork incorporating expired coffee granules. What started as an experiment in texture and depth became an exquisite linen fabric design, proving that inspiration can come from the most unexpected places!

The Future of Sustainable Mixed Media Design

As we continue to explore new ways to integrate sustainability into our design ethos, we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of mixed-media textile art. Beyond coffee granules and silk remnants, our work also includes unconventional materials such as packaging and obsolete wires as well as linen off-cuts. Juliette's latest sketchbook exploration for example, inspired by an hydrangea, uses pieces from around the studio including repurposed embroidery and fabric threads, cold tea(!), fruit bag netting, scrap wire, string and fabric off-cuts; each adding a distinct character to our designs.

Sustainability in textile design is not just about responsible sourcing; it’s about rethinking the lifecycle of materials and embracing innovation at every stage. At Juliette O Designs, we see discarded materials not as waste, but as an opportunity to craft textiles that are as meaningful as they are beautiful.
